Salt Painting at Stephen's Place

At Stephen’s Place, we’re big fans of DIY activities that involve texture as an artist’s medium. Our residents and their friends have made hydroponic sand, erupted volcanoes, painted with shaving foam, made loads of different types of play slime, and much more. Yeah, texture is a big thing in our world. Here’s how to make your own salt painting:

To make a salt painting, you will need:

  • Paper or a canvas
  • Foam brushes
  • Salt
  • Mod Podge or regular school glue
  • Watercolor paint

Instructions:

  1. Quickly brush over the full piece of paper or canvas with your Mod Podge
  2. While it’s still wet, pour salt over all of the Modge Podge’d area
  3. Gently shake off excess salt
  4. Let it dry completely
  5. Use your watercolors and foam brushes to create patterns, write names, draw smiley faces, or whatever design you feel like doing.
  6. Let dry and you're done!
