How to Make Holiday Pompoms

How to Make Holiday Pompoms

Holiday pom poms take one activity and split it into many. They can be used as decor, tree ornaments, earrings, necklaces, for knitted hats; stick them on shoes or paintings where the character is wearing a knitted hat, they can even be used as a painting tool themselves.

You will need:

  • Yarn
  • Cardboard
  • Scissors

To make your cardboard donut template:

  • A circular template (like a glass, can or plastic cup)
  • 1 circular template 1-2 inches smaller than the last (in the video below, they use a small jar and a quarter)

Instructions

  1. Use your circular template to draw 2 circles with the template on the card.
  2. Cut the circles out.
  3. Draw another small circle in the middle of each larger circle and cut these out as well.
  4. Cut a length of yarn (long enough to trace the circles and leaving extra to tie).
  5. Slide the length of yarn in between the circles so that it can be sandwiched between the two circles and later used to secure the bits of yarn that will become your pom pom
  6. Place the two cards together with the length of yarn running parallel to the edges
  7. Pass the yarn through the centre and around the sides of the circle continuously, until the whole of the card is covered
  8. Take the scissors and cut the yarn around the outer edge between the 2 circles, making sure not to disturb it too much
  9. Using the length of yarn that is sandwiched between the circles, tie a tight double knot between the circles. This will secure all of your yarn together
  10. Remove the cardboard, fluff out your pompom and use it as fun holiday decor or even make it into jewelry!
